Marshfield - Elizabeth "Liz" (Baltus) Bertram, age 69, passed away unexpectedly of a cardiac arrest on Friday, June 3, 2022 in her home. A memorial service will take place on Friday, June 10, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, 1010 East Veterans Parkway, Marshfield, WI with Father Barry Saylor officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home on Friday. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Elizabeth was born August 30, 1952 in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Vernon and Clara Baltus. She attended Our Lady of Peace grade school, graduated from Columbus Catholic High School in 1970, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Wood County for one year. She was united in marriage to Karl H. Bertram on August 19, 1972 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield, and together they had three daughters. They were married for 38 years and were devoted parents who always put their children first. Although they later divorced, the love for their children and grandchildren allowed them to remain friends, and holidays were always spent together, with Thanksgiving being Liz's favorite holiday. She loved to cook the perfect Thanksgiving feast, and the moments spent gathered around the table with her family was her greatest joy.

While raising her family, Liz also began her career with the family business, Baltus Oil Company in 1982, as a cashier at Baltus' first Bread & Butter Shop convenience store on N. Central Ave. She went on to manage that store and two others during her several decades long career with the company. She became part-owner of Baltus Oil Co. in 1992, when her father, Vernon, sold the company to her husband Karl Bertram, and her brothers John and Frank Baltus. She and Karl sold their share of the company in 2001, but she continued to work in the convenience stores. Liz set out to find a new employment experience in 2003 and began working at the Marshfield Clinic as an appointment coordinator. She then obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant certification through MSTC and worked for several years at Golden Living, Three Oaks Nursing Facility where she lovingly cared for many Alzheimer's residents. She rejoined Baltus Oil in 2013, as a part-time cashier, until her retirement in 2020. Over the years, she got to know thousands of her customers, and found great joy in serving them all. She truly was the face and identity of Baltus Oil to her many customers.

Liz was the oldest of 10 children. She loved each of her siblings deeply and knew how truly blessed she was to be a part of such a close family. Her fondest memories were of their childhood homes on Arlington Street and Schmidt Avenue, summers together at Chain O' Lakes in Minocqua, and then later at the Baltus Family Cottage on Mercer Lake in Minocqua. She cherished every moment with them and their spouses and families. Her smile and laugh were often front and center at every occasion.

The love that Liz learned and felt from her parents and siblings was passed on to her daughters, son-in-law, and the true lights of her life, her granddaughters Meghan, Jenna, and Abby. She taught them how to be caring, compassionate, and to love unconditionally. She was the best "Grammy" to them and always had their favorites stocked in the kitchen at all times. She found tremendous happiness watching all three granddaughters play volleyball and basketball in a Columbus uniform, and was so proud of all their school accomplishments. They loved their Grammy Lizzy so much and will miss her baking, hugs, and hearing the many nicknames that she had for them. She will live on in their hearts forever.

Liz adored 60's, 70's and 80's music, The Andy Griffith Show, feeding and watching birds, and all animals. She especially loved her dogs, Chloe and Sugar, and her cat, Kuchen. They will miss her dearly.

She is lovingly survived by her three daughters: Amy Bertram of Brooklyn Center, MN, Laura (Mitch) Kibbel of Spencer, Julie Bertram of Roseville, MN and her three granddaughters Meghan, Jenna, and Abigail ("Cookie"). She is further survived by her siblings, Karen (Ron) Fischer, Karl (Kim) Baltus, John (Cherie) Baltus, Janet (Mike) Taylor, Frank (Lisa) Baltus, Mary (Pryor) Baltus-Wilson, Jim (Jay Warner) Baltus. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Clara, her sisters Nancy and Suzanne Baltus, her nephew Craig Fischer, and her former husband Karl, who passed away in 2020.

Amy, Laura, and Julie wish to thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences expressed through visits, phone calls, texts, and Mom's personal favorite form of communication, Facebook. We are extremely moved by all the support and find comfort in knowing she touched so many lives.

Memorials may be designated to the family or Marshfield Area Pet Shelter.
