| 355 | https://www.marshfieldnewsherald.com/obituaries/wis361659 Marshfield - Elizabeth "Liz" (Baltus) Bertram, age 69, passed away unexpectedly of a cardiac arrest on Friday, June 3, 2022 in her home. A memorial service will take place on Friday, June 10, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, 1010 East Veterans Parkway, Marshfield, WI with Father Barry Saylor officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home on Friday. A private burial will take place at a later date. Elizabeth was born August 30, 1952 in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Vernon and Clara Baltus. She attended Our Lady of Peace grade school, graduated from Columbus Catholic High School in 1970, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Wood County for one year. She was united in marriage to Karl H. Bertram on August 19, 1972 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield, and together they had three daughters. They were married for 38 years and were devoted parents who always put their children first. Although they later divorced, the love for their children and grandchildren allowed them to remain friends, and holidays were always spent together, with Thanksgiving being Liz's favorite holiday. She loved to cook the perfect Thanksgiving feast, and the moments spent gathered around the table with her family was her greatest joy. While raising her family, Liz also began her career with the family business, Baltus Oil Company in 1982, as a cashier at Baltus' first Bread & Butter Shop convenience store on N. Central Ave. She went on to manage that store and two others during her several decades long career with the company. She became part-owner of Baltus Oil Co. in 1992, when her father, Vernon, sold the company to her husband Karl Bertram, and her brothers John and Frank Baltus. She and Karl sold their share of the company in 2001, but she continued to work in the convenience stores. Liz set out to find a new employment experience in 2003 and began working at the Marshfield Clinic as an appointment coordinator. She then obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant certification through MSTC and worked for several years at Golden Living, Three Oaks Nursing Facility where she lovingly cared for many Alzheimer's residents. She rejoined Baltus Oil in 2013, as a part-time cashier, until her retirement in 2020. Over the years, she got to know thousands of her customers, and found great joy in serving them all. She truly was the face and identity of Baltus Oil to her many customers. Liz was the oldest of 10 children. She loved each of her siblings deeply and knew how truly blessed she was to be a part of such a close family. Her fondest memories were of their childhood homes on Arlington Street and Schmidt Avenue, summers together at Chain O' Lakes in Minocqua, and then later at the Baltus Family Cottage on Mercer Lake in Minocqua. She cherished every moment with them and their spouses and families. Her smile and laugh were often front and center at every occasion. The love that Liz learned and felt from her parents and siblings was passed on to her daughters, son-in-law, and the true lights of her life, her granddaughters Meghan, Jenna, and Abby. She taught them how to be caring, compassionate, and to love unconditionally. She was the best "Grammy" to them and always had their favorites stocked in the kitchen at all times. She found tremendous happiness watching all three granddaughters play volleyball and basketball in a Columbus uniform, and was so proud of all their school accomplishments. They loved their Grammy Lizzy so much and will miss her baking, hugs, and hearing the many nicknames that she had for them. She will live on in their hearts forever. Liz adored 60's, 70's and 80's music, The Andy Griffith Show, feeding and watching birds, and all animals. She especially loved her dogs, Chloe and Sugar, and her cat, Kuchen. They will miss her dearly. She is lovingly survived by her three daughters: Amy Bertram of Brooklyn Center, MN, Laura (Mitch) Kibbel of Spencer, Julie Bertram of Roseville, MN and her three granddaughters Meghan, Jenna, and Abigail ("Cookie"). She is further survived by her siblings, Karen (Ron) Fischer, Karl (Kim) Baltus, John (Cherie) Baltus, Janet (Mike) Taylor, Frank (Lisa) Baltus, Mary (Pryor) Baltus-Wilson, Jim (Jay Warner) Baltus. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Clara, her sisters Nancy and Suzanne Baltus, her nephew Craig Fischer, and her former husband Karl, who passed away in 2020. Amy, Laura, and Julie wish to thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences expressed through visits, phone calls, texts, and Mom's personal favorite form of communication, Facebook. We are extremely moved by all the support and find comfort in knowing she touched so many lives. Memorials may be designated to the family or Marshfield Area Pet Shelter. Little Julie Osowski, cousin of the groom and god child was the miniature bride. She wore a gown identical to the bride’s, made by her mother, Mrs. Thomas Osowski, and also carried a bouquet identical to the bride. The groom was given in marriage by his parents. He was attired in a white brocaded tuxedo trimmed with black around the lapel, and wore a white stephanotis boutonniere. His attendants were Wally Baehr, best man; Richard Luzinski, friend of the groom, David Osowski, brother of the groom, and Allen Symbal, brother of the bride. They wore white brocaded tuxedos trimmed with black around the lapel and a colored carnation to match the bridesmaids’ gowns. The ushers, Thomas Osowski, brother of the groom, and Marshall Symbal, cousin of the bride, completed the wedding party. A reception, dinner and dance followed the ceremony at Quonset Hall, Thorp, Wisconsin. Miss Symbal was a 1970 graduate of Stanley-Boyd High School. Mr. Osowski was a 1969 graduate from Thorp High School, and now is stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. The newlyweds are living in Junction City, Kansas. Pre-nuptial showers were given for the bride by Mrs. John Osowski and Mrs. Tom Osowski, and also by Mrs. Sylvester Abramowicz and Mrs. Ted Symbal. | Family (F324)

| 371 | https://www.wiclarkcountyhistory.org/7data/145/145123.htm Obit: Fijalkiewicz, Emily (1928 – 2020) Transcriber: stan@wiclarkcountyhistory.org Surnames: Fijalkiewicz, Rohland, Klabon, Recker, Vargas, Fields, Gilardi, Petke, Rhinehart Source: Tribune/Record/Gleaner (Abbotsford, WI) 26 Aug 2020 Fijalkiewicz, Emily (4 DEC 1928 – 17 AUG 2020) Emily Fijalkiewicz, 91, Greenwood, died on Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, at Country Terrace Assisted Living in Abbotsford. A graveside service for all to attend will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Aug. 27, at Riverside Cemetery in Withee. A private celebration of life will be held following interment for family and limited invited guests, where masks and the use of hand sanitizer is highly recommended. Emily Rohland was born on Dec. 4, 1928, in Withee, the twelfth child of John and Caroline (nee Klabon) Rohland, and the last living child in that family. She was raised and received her education in the Withee area, graduating from Withee High School in 1946. Emily was united in marriage to George S. Fijalkiewicz on Feb. 24, 1947. They moved out west to Oregon and California, where her husband worked in the logging industry and as a rural mail carrier in Mt. Shasta, Calif., until transferring to the Greenwood Post Office in 1954. Emily attended Taylor County Teachers College in Medford for two years, driving daily from Greenwood to Medford, graduating in May 1962 with her teaching certificate. She then went on to UW-Stevens Point to earn her bachelor’s degree in education and later her master’s degree in sociology. Emily first taught at Rocky Run School near Greenwood, and other 1-room schools early in her teaching career. She then taught in the Greenwood School District for several decades, touching the lives of hundreds of students who passed through her classroom doors. Late in her career, she served as a guidance counselor and served on curriculum committees for the State of Wisconsin. Emily had resided in Greenwood from 1954 until the family home was sold late last year. She had many interests, but especially loved spending time with her family, writing articles about her rural upbringing (several of which were published in the Marshfield News-Herald), dancing, and Elderhostel trips. Emily had a deep interest in genealogy. She researched her family roots in Germany and Lithuania and was able to reconnect to other branches of the family. Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing German, she was able to help arrange visits from some of these “lost” relatives and maintained an ongoing correspondence with them. In addition, she was very active in her community and helped bring The Highground veterans memorial park and museum to Neillsville. She is survived by her four children: Carolyn Recker of Elmhurst, Ill., Sienna Vargas of Greenwood, Jerry (Pam) Fields of Elma, Iowa, and John (Diane) Fields of Stoddard; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A special thank you to Marge Rohland for all she did to care for Emily. She was Mom’s angel, always providing loving, selfless, care with a smile and warm cheer. It is hard to convey how much this meant to her family. Emily was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Dec. 27, 2010; one grandson: Tony Fijalkiewicz-Gilardi; one sister: Elsie Petke; eight brothers: Julius, Albert, Fred, Otto, Henry, Emil, Edmond and Rhinehart; and four siblings in infancy: Adolph, Emma, Otilia and Frieda. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cuddiefh.com. Cuddie Funeral Home, Greenwood, is assisting the family with arrangements. | Rohland, Emily (I3646)

Joanne was born at home on May 5, 1930, in Junction (Stanley), Wisconsin, to Joseph and Bernice (Symbal) Szczech at the height of the depression. She grew up on the family farm and learned the value of hard work. Joanne was an accomplished cook and baker, gardener, and dressmaker. Her first job was as a dressmaker, first in Thorp, and later in Milwaukee, where she met her future husband, George. On April 14, 1951, they were united in marriage at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp. They made their home in the Milwaukee area and, after raising 5 children, she returned to the workforce, sewing high end window treatments in the Milwaukee area. In 1971, they moved to Marshfield. Joanne worked for Modern of Marshfield, sewing furniture upholstery, then later became a Cook at the University of Wisconsin in Marshfield. She ended her working years as she began them, sewing, at the Marshfield Medical Center, and later did so part-time well into retirement—a great seamstress was hard to find. Joanne was an exemplary cook and baker, having learned from her mother and grandmothers. She was proud of her heritage and prepared tasty Polish food; her pierogi and gołąbki were extraordinary, and her canned dill pickles were noteworthy. She passed those skills on to her children and grandchildren. Her holiday meals and gatherings were legendary and will long be remembered. Joanne and her husband loved to garden and had large productive gardens. She also loved to can and preserve food, having learned to be thrifty, growing up during the depression. For many years, she was a volunteer for the Knights of Columbus, serving for many dinners and events. She also was a long-time member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and active in their PCCW; she baked many a cake for funerals at OLP. Joanne was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, George, on August 6, 2021. She is survived by her five children: Leon (Tom Abbott) of Sanford, Florida, Jean (Perry) Heideman of Milwaukee, George E. (Cindy) of Chili, and Mary (Dan) Williams and Donna (Tom) Hayes of Marshfield. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Joe (Jen) Konieczny, Jake (Heather) Konieczny, Justin (Adrienne) Heideman, Rachel (Tony) Karlin, Caitlin Heideman, Kali (Mike) Ditolla, Alexis (Eric) Harris, Kyle Williams, Kirsten (Jake) Bucki, Sean (Ashley) Hayes, and 19 great-grandchildren (Emmitt, Mac, Brooklynn, Eli, Anna, Rose, Joy, Soren, Charlie, Josie, Owen, Collin, Lily, Alec, Lydia, Isabel, Emma, Finley, and Quinn). Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, by brothers Joe and Frank (Mona), and by her sister, Steph (Frank) Kotecki. She is survived by her sisters Carol (John) Szymanski and Mary (the late Bill) Boh. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Rembs Funeral Home in Marshfield with Rev. Douglas Robertson officiating. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery will follow. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, October 17, and from 10:00 am until service time on Tuesday, all at the funeral home. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday. The family of Joanne Konieczny would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Marshfield Medical Center for their compassionate care during her last days, and especially Brooke, her RN, and Dr. O’Neill of Palliative Care who took great time with her and listened to her with compassion. Memorials may be given in the name of George & Joanne Konieczny to Columbus Catholic Schools. | Szczech, Joanne Kathryn (I0002)

| 382 | Irene Heideman (née Russell) E. Irene Heideman passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on August 29, 2024, in Muskego, WI. Irene was the only child born to Floyd Freeman and Hilda Mary (Syrja) Russell in Milwaukee, WI on July 8, 1932. In the seventh grade, Irene expressed dislike for her given name Esther. With a move to a new school, she went by her middle name Irene for the rest of her life. As a child, Irene moved several times between Milwaukee and Merrill, WI. She attended Merrill High School but moved once more to graduate from Riverside High School in Milwaukee. Later in life, she furthered her education by taking classes at Milwaukee Area Technical Institute and Waukesha County Technical Institute, which fueled her passion for literature and writing. Irene developed her artistic talents at an early age. And while she was awarded a blue ribbon for an acrylic painting at the Waukesha County Fair, she switched to batik medium and exhibited in many art fairs in the Milwaukee area. Her passion for the arts also extended to refinishing old furniture and operating her own antique shop called “The Window Pane” located in Vernon, WI. Beloved wife of Harvey for 62 years until his passing in 2014, Irene shared an interest for traveling with her husband. On their honeymoon, they journeyed along Route 66 and returned to Milwaukee with an empty gas tank and just two dollars to their name. After years of family vacations, the couple revisited both coasts and embarked on numerous trips to England. As an avid writer, Irene filled many journals with her poetry, essays, family stories and reflections. Irene's thirst for knowledge was evident in her personal library of over 600 books. While she held a variety of jobs over her lifetime, many incorporated her flair for decorating, including positions at Drapery Showcase, Ken Michaels Furniture, and Peter Schwabe, Inc. She was active in her community by volunteering as a school nurse, a Cub Scout Den Leader, and in her later years, an Interfaith Home Caregiver. Irene's long spiritual journey was profound and culminated in her finding a community at Unitarian Universalist Church West in Brookfield, where she was involved in the Women’s Writing group and the Lay Pastoral Care Team. Irene was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She leaves behind a loving family, including her children, Perry (Jean) Heideman, Christine (Jim) Karas, Patrick (Kerry) Heideman, Lisa (Rod Sayas) Heideman, and Kelly (Pete) Bognar. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Justin (Ady) Heideman, Rachael (Tony) Karlin, Caitlyn Heideman, Emily (Noah) Ballard, Michael Karas, Russell (Christen) Karas, Kaelee Heideman, Andrew Heideman, Christopher Heideman, Tristan Sayas, Nathan Bognar, Simon Bognar, Miles Bognar, Jack Bognar, and Elliot Bognar—and great-grandchildren Soren Heideman, Rose Karlin, Joy Karlin, Lincoln Ballard, and Oliver Ballard. A special thank you to Irene’s caregivers Nicole and Kati from Brighton Hospice for their extra care and attention. A memorial service will be held at Unitarian Universalist Church West, 13001 W. North Ave., Brookfield, WI 53005, on Saturday, October 19th at 2 pm. A reception will be held in the Community Room following the service. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, charitable donations be made to the American Library Association honoring Irene’s memory and her love for reading. | Russell, Esther Irene (I0169)

| 383 | It is worthwhile to talk a little about Peter Kowalski (Catherina's second husband), since his story turned out to be very interesting. Peter was born in Lasek house 121 on 24 Jun 1874. More than likely, there was considerable pressure from his family to marry Catherina Pilat in 1899 in Klikuszowa. I believe this is true because Peter was 25 years old, but Catherina was 40. Peter's mother Anna died in 1901, and there was a settlement of the properties. It is possible that Peter received a sum of money or some property at this point. This might be how he financed his immigration to the US from Hamburg to New York (Ellis Island) from 19-31 Jan 1903. It is unclear 4 if his wife knew about his leaving (if he promised to send for her), or if he left without telling anyone. Most likely, he was running away from his life in Poland. There was no such thing as divorce then, and the only way a man could leave a marriage was to run away and hope that he didn't get caught. In Chicago, he met and married Catherina Jachymiak and had 2 sons until he was caught and the marriage annulled. The next time we see Peter in the records, he is volunteering to fight in Haller's Blue Army in World War I. Even though he is not a citizen of the US, he volunteers to fight anyway. He is too old to fight, but he lies about his age so that he is young enough to qualify. He goes to Europe in 1918 to fight and returns to the US in 1920. The next time I find him in the records he is working as a coal miner in Ohio in 1930. After that, I know nothing about what happened to him. I find it very ironic that a man who would abandon his first wife would do something as brave as volunteering to face machine guns to defend his homeland at the age of 44. | Kowalczyk Kowalski, Piotr (I3439)
