Fijalkiewicz, Emily (4 DEC 1928 – 17 AUG 2020)

Emily Fijalkiewicz, 91, Greenwood, died on Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, at Country Terrace Assisted Living in Abbotsford. A graveside service for all to attend will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Aug. 27, at Riverside Cemetery in Withee. A private celebration of life will be held following interment for family and limited invited guests, where masks and the use of hand sanitizer is highly recommended.

Emily Rohland was born on Dec. 4, 1928, in Withee, the twelfth child of John and Caroline (nee Klabon) Rohland, and the last living child in that family. She was raised and received her education in the Withee area, graduating from Withee High School in 1946. Emily was united in marriage to George S. Fijalkiewicz on Feb. 24, 1947. They moved out west to Oregon and California, where her husband worked in the logging industry and as a rural mail carrier in Mt. Shasta, Calif., until transferring to the Greenwood Post Office in 1954. Emily attended Taylor County Teachers College in Medford for two years, driving daily from Greenwood to Medford, graduating in May 1962 with her teaching certificate. She then went on to UW-Stevens Point to earn her bachelor’s degree in education and later her master’s degree in sociology. Emily first taught at Rocky Run School near Greenwood, and other 1-room schools early in her teaching career. She then taught in the Greenwood School District for several decades, touching the lives of hundreds of students who passed through her classroom doors. Late in her career, she served as a guidance counselor and served on curriculum committees for the State of Wisconsin. Emily had resided in Greenwood from 1954 until the family home was sold late last year. She had many interests, but especially loved spending time with her family, writing articles about her rural upbringing (several of which were published in the Marshfield News-Herald), dancing, and Elderhostel trips. Emily had a deep interest in genealogy. She researched her family roots in Germany and Lithuania and was able to reconnect to other branches of the family. Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing German, she was able to help arrange visits from some of these “lost” relatives and maintained an ongoing correspondence with them. In addition, she was very active in her community and helped bring The Highground veterans memorial park and museum to Neillsville.

She is survived by her four children: Carolyn Recker of Elmhurst, Ill., Sienna Vargas of Greenwood, Jerry (Pam) Fields of Elma, Iowa, and John (Diane) Fields of Stoddard; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A special thank you to Marge Rohland for all she did to care for Emily. She was Mom’s angel, always providing loving, selfless, care with a smile and warm cheer. It is hard to convey how much this meant to her family.

Emily was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Dec. 27, 2010; one grandson: Tony Fijalkiewicz-Gilardi; one sister: Elsie Petke; eight brothers: Julius, Albert, Fred, Otto, Henry, Emil, Edmond and Rhinehart; and four siblings in infancy: Adolph, Emma, Otilia and Frieda.

Konieczny, Joanne Kathryn (5 May 1930 – 3 October 2022)

Joanne Kathryn Konieczny, 92, passed peacefully on Monday, October 3, 2022, at the Marshfield Medical Center Hospital, surrounded by family.

Joanne was born at home on May 5, 1930, in Junction (Stanley), Wisconsin, to Joseph and Bernice (Symbal) Szczech at the height of the depression. She grew up on the family farm and learned the value of hard work. Joanne was an accomplished cook and baker, gardener, and dressmaker.

Her first job was as a dressmaker, first in Thorp, and later in Milwaukee, where she met her future husband, George. On April 14, 1951, they were united in marriage at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp. They made their home in the Milwaukee area and, after raising 5 children, she returned to the workforce, sewing high end window treatments in the Milwaukee area.

In 1971, they moved to Marshfield. Joanne worked for Modern of Marshfield, sewing furniture upholstery, then later became a Cook at the University of Wisconsin in Marshfield. She ended her working years as she began them, sewing, at the Marshfield Medical Center, and later did so part-time well into retirement—a great seamstress was hard to find.

Joanne was an exemplary cook and baker, having learned from her mother and grandmothers. She was proud of her heritage and prepared tasty Polish food; her pierogi and gołąbki were extraordinary, and her canned dill pickles were noteworthy. She passed those skills on to her children and grandchildren. Her holiday meals and gatherings were legendary and will long be remembered. Joanne and her husband loved to garden and had large productive gardens. She also loved to can and preserve food, having learned to be thrifty, growing up during the depression. For many years, she was a volunteer for the Knights of Columbus, serving for many dinners and events. She also was a long-time member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and active in their PCCW; she baked many a cake for funerals at OLP.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, George, on August 6, 2021. She is survived by her five children: Leon (Tom Abbott) of Sanford, Florida, Jean (Perry) Heideman of Milwaukee, George E. (Cindy) of Chili, and Mary (Dan) Williams and Donna (Tom) Hayes of Marshfield. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Joe (Jen) Konieczny, Jake (Heather) Konieczny, Justin (Adrienne) Heideman, Rachel (Tony) Karlin, Caitlin Heideman, Kali (Mike) Ditolla, Alexis (Eric) Harris, Kyle Williams, Kirsten (Jake) Bucki, Sean (Ashley) Hayes, and 19 great-grandchildren (Emmitt, Mac, Brooklynn, Eli, Anna, Rose, Joy, Soren, Charlie, Josie, Owen, Collin, Lily, Alec, Lydia, Isabel, Emma, Finley, and Quinn). Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, by brothers Joe and Frank (Mona), and by her sister, Steph (Frank) Kotecki. She is survived by her sisters Carol (John) Szymanski and Mary (the late Bill) Boh.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Rembs Funeral Home in Marshfield with Rev. Douglas Robertson officiating. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery will follow. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, October 17, and from 10:00 am until service time on Tuesday, all at the funeral home. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday.

The family of Joanne Konieczny would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Marshfield Medical Center for their compassionate care during her last days, and especially Brooke, her RN, and Dr. O’Neill of Palliative Care who took great time with her and listened to her with compassion.

Memorials may be given in the name of George & Joanne Konieczny to Columbus Catholic Schools.

372 Irene Heideman (née Russell)

E. Irene Heideman passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on August 29, 2024, in Muskego, WI. Irene was the only child born to Floyd Freeman and Hilda Mary (Syrja) Russell in Milwaukee, WI on July 8, 1932. In the seventh grade, Irene expressed dislike for her given name Esther. With a move to a new school, she went by her middle name Irene for the rest of her life.

As a child, Irene moved several times between Milwaukee and Merrill, WI. She attended Merrill High School but moved once more to graduate from Riverside High School in Milwaukee. Later in life, she furthered her education by taking classes at Milwaukee Area Technical Institute and Waukesha County Technical Institute, which fueled her passion for literature and writing.

Irene developed her artistic talents at an early age. And while she was awarded a blue ribbon for an acrylic painting at the Waukesha County Fair, she switched to batik medium and exhibited in many art fairs in the Milwaukee area. Her passion for the arts also extended to refinishing old furniture and operating her own antique shop called “The Window Pane” located in Vernon, WI.

Beloved wife of Harvey for 62 years until his passing in 2014, Irene shared an interest for traveling with her husband. On their honeymoon, they journeyed along Route 66 and returned to Milwaukee with an empty gas tank and just two dollars to their name. After years of family vacations, the couple revisited both coasts and embarked on numerous trips to England.

As an avid writer, Irene filled many journals with her poetry, essays, family stories and reflections. Irene's thirst for knowledge was evident in her personal library of over 600 books.

While she held a variety of jobs over her lifetime, many incorporated her flair for decorating, including positions at Drapery Showcase, Ken Michaels Furniture, and Peter Schwabe, Inc. She was active in her community by volunteering as a school nurse, a Cub Scout Den Leader, and in her later years, an Interfaith Home Caregiver.

Irene's long spiritual journey was profound and culminated in her finding a community at Unitarian Universalist Church West in Brookfield, where she was involved in the Women’s Writing group and the Lay Pastoral Care Team.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She leaves behind a loving family, including her children, Perry (Jean) Heideman, Christine (Jim) Karas, Patrick (Kerry) Heideman, Lisa (Rod Sayas) Heideman, and Kelly (Pete) Bognar. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Justin (Ady) Heideman, Rachael (Tony) Karlin, Caitlyn Heideman, Emily (Noah) Ballard, Michael Karas, Russell (Christen) Karas, Kaelee Heideman, Andrew Heideman, Christopher Heideman, Tristan Sayas, Nathan Bognar, Simon Bognar, Miles Bognar, Jack Bognar, and Elliot Bognar—and great-grandchildren Soren Heideman, Rose Karlin, Joy Karlin, Lincoln Ballard, and Oliver Ballard.

A special thank you to Irene’s caregivers Nicole and Kati from Brighton Hospice for their extra care and attention.

A memorial service will be held at Unitarian Universalist Church West, 13001 W. North Ave., Brookfield, WI 53005, on Saturday, October 19th at 2 pm. A reception will be held in the Community Room following the service. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, charitable donations be made to the American Library Association honoring Irene’s memory and her love for reading.

373 It is worthwhile to talk a little about Peter Kowalski (Catherina's second husband), since his story turned out to be very interesting. Peter was born in Lasek house 121 on 24 Jun 1874. More than likely, there was considerable pressure from his family to marry Catherina Pilat in 1899 in Klikuszowa. I believe this is true because Peter was 25 years old, but Catherina was 40. Peter's mother Anna died in 1901, and there was a settlement of the properties. It is possible that Peter received a sum of money or some property at this point. This might be how he financed his immigration to the US from Hamburg to New York (Ellis Island) from 19-31 Jan 1903. It is unclear

if his wife knew about his leaving (if he promised to send for her), or if he left without telling anyone. Most likely, he was running away from his life in Poland. There was no such thing as divorce then, and the only way a man could leave a marriage was to run away and hope that he didn't get caught. In Chicago, he met and married Catherina Jachymiak and had 2 sons until he was caught and the marriage annulled. The next time we see Peter in the records, he is volunteering to fight in Haller's Blue Army in World War I. Even though he is not a citizen of the US, he volunteers to fight anyway. He is too old to fight, but he lies about his age so that he is young enough to qualify. He goes to Europe in 1918 to fight and returns to the US in 1920. The next time I find him in the records he is working as a coal miner in Ohio in 1930. After that, I know nothing about what happened to him. I find it very ironic that a man who would abandon his first wife would do something as brave as volunteering to face machine guns to defend his homeland at the age of 44.
