    Smoczyk, Edwin Leonard (14 June 1950 - 13 January 2012)

    Edwin L. Smoczyk, age 61, or Arcadia, WI, formerly of Thorp, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2012, at his home. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. The Rev. William Felix officiated and burial followed in New St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Justin Johnson, Travis Johnson, Jesse Smoczyk, Kevin Beaufeaux, Joe Pletka, Jr., and Eugene Pogodzinski. Visitation was held at the church, on Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

    Edwin Leonard Smoczyk was born on June 14, 1950, in the Town of Taft, rural Thorp, WI, the son of Frank and Frances (Mendalski) Smoczyk. He received his elementary education at Yaeger School and graduated from Thorp High School in 1969. Ed then moved to Chicago and worked for two years as a security guard. He returned to Thorp and was employed with Nelson Muffler, in Neillsville, until the plant closed in 2005. Ed then transferred to the Nelson Muffler plant, in Arcadia, WI, where he has resided until the time of his death.

    He was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church and was a member of the Corvette Club in Baraboo.

    Ed had many interests, but especially enjoyed hunting, classic cars, country music festivals and a good joke.

    He is survived by one brother, Henry Smoczyk of Thorp; one sister, Rose Meyer of Stanley; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Ed was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Benedict, Ernest and Leon; and one sister, Mary Kirschner.

    Smoczyk, John (12 JUL 1886 - 12 AUG 1960)



    John Smoczyk, age 94, a former resident of Stanley, died in Milwaukee at 7 o’clock Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Helen O’Hara.



    Mr. Smoczyk was born July 12, 1866 in Poland, and was married to Josephine Blastic in Poland in 1891. The next year they came tot eh United States and settled in Wellsville, N.Y., where he did tannery work. In 1898 they moved to Stanley, Wis., where he continued in that employment until the tannery close. They then moved to a farm near the city of Stanley where they resided until his retirement in 1938, when they returned to Stanley. His wife preceded him in death in 1954, and for the past year he had lived with his daughters in Milwaukee.



    Surviving are five sons, Stanley Edward of Stanley; John of Auburn, Wash.; Frank of Thorp; Steve of Englewood, Colo.; and Michael of Minneapolis; four daughters, Mrs. Albert (Mary) Hewins, Greendale, Wis.; Mrs. Peter (Sophie) Walenta and Mrs. Helen O’Hara, both of Milwaukee; and Mrs. Jennie Tanner, Deanver, Colo. He was preceded in death by two sons, Peter, who was killed in 1918 in World War I, and Tony in 1958.



    Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9:30 o’clock at St. Mary’s Church, Stanley, with Rev. George Mathieu officiating. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

    My grandfather was his son John, married to Martha Radtke. They had four children, Virginia, Beulah(my mom), John (Jack), and Rita. They farmed in the Litchville, ND area until they moved to Washington State in 1940.
