| 426 | Obit Betty Lou Stuk, 88, Lewiston Posted: Wednesday, May 20, 2009 12:00 am Major Betty Lou Stuk, U.S. Army, retired, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Monroe, Wash., from age and Alzheimer-related causes. She was born to Leo Joseph Stuk and May Amelia Whaley Stuk on Aug. 6, 1921, in St. Paul, Minn. She moved with her family in 1923 to Edmonds, Wash., where her parents owned a chicken co-op, then the family moved to Lapwai when Betty Lou was in grade school, and she graduated from Lapwai High School. She began her military career soon after graduating. She enlisted as an auxiliary in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in May 1943. In July 1943, she converted to the Women's Regular Army Corps. (WAC). She received a field commission in 1951 in the grade of second lieutenant. She attended the universities of Maryland and Missouri. She retired with the grade of major on Oct. 1, 1968. While in the Army she received a commendation medal and Legion of Merit award. Betty Lou loved the Army and she was proud to serve during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. She traveled the world, living in Germany, Japan and Korea. Once retired, Betty Lou returned to Lewiston to take care of her mother and volunteered delivering for Meals on Wheels and belonged to the Lewiston Garden Club. Betty Lou married John A. Grannis at Yokohama, Japan, on Aug. 14, 1954. They divorced in 1960. She is survived by her sister, Leona Wilkins of Everett. Wash.; sister-in-law Dorothy Stuk of Lewiston; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters May Jane Tirril, Dorathy Drechsler and Lola May LaFay; and brother Leo Junior Stuk. Services will be held at a later date. She leaves to mourn her death, three children, two sons and one daughter, Walter and Leon of Thorp, Clark Co., Wis., and Mrs. Nellie Rogus of Withee, Clark Co. Her husband preceded her in death Feb. 18, 1918. The funeral services were held at St. Hedwig’s Church Monday morning at 10 a.m., Rev. F. A. Kulig officiating, where a very large number of relatives and friends attended, interment following in the Catholic Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Anton Walowick, Martin Rogalski, Joe Kopinski, John Pajak, Walter Badzinski and Victor Lopacz. Mrs. Szczech guarded her home with a mother’s and father’s care, always a kind and loving woman and as she lived she died. Without a word of farewell or warning she entered the darkness or dawn we call death. She has only left with us her wealth of though and deed, the memory of a brave never failing woman who bowed alone to sleep. May her soul rest in peace. | 430 | Obit We celebrate the life of Ferrysburg resident Felix J. Tokarz, who passed away Monday, November 22, 2010, at the age of 89. He was born August 12, 1921, in Chicago to Frank and Catherine (Polanczas) Tokarz. Mr. Tokarz graduated from DePaul University in Chicago and went on to study the Russian language at the University of Chicago as part of his military training. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After settling his family in Ferrysburg, Felix worked 25 years for Dake Corp. as the export sales manager. Outside of work, he was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he served as lector for over 25 years. He was actively involved in church functions, including the DDF Fund Drive, Parish Festival and school committees, and was an adult altar server. Felix never missed a chance to cheer on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, and he took every opportunity to travel to see his four children and 16 grandchildren. He always enjoyed playing a casual game of cards, reading a great book and engaging everyone he met in friendly conversation. Felix has been a devoted husband to Anne E. (Szczech) Tokarz since October 5, 1952. She survives him, along with his children: Ken (Marcia)Tokarz of Wausau, Wis., Mary Anne (Dave) DeMarse of Grand Haven, Dan (Elia) Tokarz of Palatine, Ill., and Ron Tokarz of Vestal, N.Y.; as well as 16 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and sister Harriet (nee Hermina) Buck of Port Barrington, Ill. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Das. We are all blessed by his long and happy life, and look forward to being reunited with him in Heaven for eternity. Ruth was born on October 29, 1924 in Stanley, Wisconsin to Mary (Ciolkosz) and Stanley (Ed) Smoczyk. After graduating from Stanley High School, Ruth worked in Chicago, but after several years, she missed the “wide open spaces” and returned home. In 1947 she married Kasmer Michalak, and they moved to the Michalak family farm on Highway G north of Stanley. After Kap died in a tragic accident on July 4, 1963, Ruth continued raising their six children on the farm and worked for many years at Thorp Finance and ITT Corporation. After moving to Eau Claire in 1983, she worked for the Eau Claire County Senior Aides Department and also volunteered in the Lakeshore Elementary School library. As a small child, Ruth discovered the magic of books and had a lifelong love of a “good clean story.” She was a huge fan of westerns (especially Louis L ’Amour), classic mystery novels and John Wayne movies. Though Ruth faced tremendous challenges during her 94 years, there were also many reasons for great joy and celebration. She faced life with faith, courage, humility, grace, a quick wit and a well-honed sense of humor. Those whose lives she entered were blessed by her kindness, generosity and wisdom. Ruth’s family was most important to her. She will be missed by all who knew her and especially her children LaVerne (Janet) Michalak, Mary Ann (the late Samuel) Voytovich, Patricia (Steve) Telisak, Linda (Mark) Schmidt, Deborah Michalak (Susan Sherlag), Cindy Michalak (Barb Beckstead), her twelve grandchildren; her 21 great-grandchildren; her sisters Colleen (the late Jim) Ruby, and Lorraine (Louis) Champa, and brother Michael (Carol Lee) Smoczyk. He was an Army veteran who proudly served his country in an artillery unit from 1966-68. He was a pipefitter for SC Johnson, and he retired after 38.5 years. Butch was an active member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. An all-around outdoorsman, he loved trapshooting, hunting, four wheeling, fishing, and spending time up north in Friendship, WI. Grandpa was incredibly involved in his grandchildren’s school activities spending numerous hours in bleachers, watching their games and other school activities. They lived in Chicago and New Baden, Ill., before moving to the town of Worden where they farmed for 42 years. Ethel was a homemaker and farm wife. She loved her family, gardening, her pets and was a strong believer in education. She is survived by one son, Dr. George M. Amy was born on May 6, 1927 on a farm south of Withee, WI to Evald & Caroline Ammentorp. She was baptized and confirmed at the Danish Lutheran Church in Withee. She attended Moody School and graduated from Withee High School in 1944. She then attended Eau Claire business school for one year where she learned secretarial skills including bookkeeping. Amy was married to Henry Mauel Jr. on June 2, 1950 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. They were active members of Holy Rosary for the rest of their lives. Henry and Amy were happily married for 61 years and blessed with 14 children. In 1957, they built their home in a new neighborhood in Owen. Amy lived in that home until her death on April 10, 2023 where she was surrounded by her children. In 1960, Hank & Amy took over Mauel’s Dairy from his parents and built a new plant on Highway X. Amy took over the bookkeeping and worked from home until the youngest girls went to school. Amy was also active in the Parish Council of Catholic Women. She joined Bridge Club shortly after she married and played for the next 70 years. After the kids were older, she joined golf and bowling teams. Amy’s priority was her family. As the middle child of a family of 7, she always enjoyed taking care of her younger brothers. As a Mom, she encouraged children to be involved in summer programs and activities. She enjoyed attending their sporting events and concerts and encouraged all her children to attend college or vocational school. She continued supporting her 25 grandchildren and attended all their special events. She loved cooking for everyone and spending holidays together. Amy was proceeded in death by her husband Hank, her son Bob, her parents Evald & Caroline, her brother Roy (Marian) Ammentorp, Sisters: Ruth (Roger) Wolfram, Marian (Hank) Haas, her sister-in-laws: Shirley Ammentorp, and Barb Ammentorp. Frank Joseph Ogurek was born on March 11, 1928, in Chicago, IL. He was the son of Frank A. and Valeria (Tarka) Ogurek and was an only child. He grew up in Lublin, WI, where his father ran the Ogurek Lumber and Fuel business. Frank went to Withee High School where he met his future wife, Mary Zawacki. They were married on September 4, 1948, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. Frank and Mary began their life together in Chicago, where they worked until the birth of their first child. Shortly after, they moved back to Lublin where Frank started his own business as a milk hauler. A few years later, he moved to Thorp, where he continued to haul milk for many years. Frank hauled milk for Lombard Dairy, Blue Moon Dairy, and others. He spent a lot of time plowing snow in the winter and pumping the lift for the plow by hand. A memorable moment was when he got an electric hydraulic pump and no longer had to manually pump the lift. He also hauled cheese from multiple dairies to processing plants in the area. Frank also raised chickens for Arcadia Fryers for many years, along with raising feeder pigs and later raising his own Hereford beef cattle. After selling his trucking business to his son, Tom, in 1986, he went to work at the Clark County Health Care Center. He also worked nights at Stanley Corporation and retired in 1991. Frank’s true passions were his faith, family, and helping others. More than anything, he was loving, caring, wise, patient and hardworking. He embraced his Polish heritage by participating in the Polish Folk Dancing Group and the Polish Heritage Society. He was active with the Catholic Church, the Thorp Historical Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Thorp School Board. With his wife, Mary, Frank was a devoted volunteer for the county by driving people in need to their doctor appointments. He also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, traveling, camping, polka dancing, and socializing with his family and friends. Frank was always there to brighten the lives of others. Born to Cliff and Joan Schmidt on October 5, 1961, he is lovingly remembered by his sons, Jackson and Leland; his parents; his siblings, Jim Schmidt, Kay Schmidt and Dennis Schmidt; and their children. Roger grew up in Thorp, WI, where he helped on the family farm. His love of animals led him to having numerous pets, including a goat, a sheep, turkeys, ducks, geese, guinea hens and banties. He was most often seen running around barefoot with a hen on his shoulder. As he grew up, he always said he would one day live in Colorado. After high school he attended college in Wausau and Eau Claire before moving to Colorado to finish his education in Computer Programming, at which point he had achieved his dream of living high up in the Rocky Mountains with his dogs Flip & Max (and later with Tucker & Murphy). He will be fondly remembered for his daily postings on social media where his puns, quick quips and genuine humor brought laughter and good memories to others. Garret Lee Beck was born July 11, 1952 at Valley City, ND, the son of Rex H. Jr. and Grace (Faust) Beck. He graduated from high school in 1970 at Tower City, ND. Garry entered the US Air Force in June of 1970 and served until honorably discharged in November 1976. Garry was united in marriage to Aquina Hersel on July 8, 1972 at Peerless, MT. While in the Air Force, they lived in Montana, Florida, and Alaska. Upon his discharge they lived in Montana and various cities in North Dakota, including Buffalo, Wyndmere, Thompson, and West Fargo. He enjoyed his work with community people and farmers while he delivered fuel and represented the bulk fuel company he worked for. In the later years he drove truck for window manufacturing companies. On August 16, 1992, Garry was given the gift of life with a donated kidney via Life Source. His new kidney allowed him to live a full life again, free of dialysis until 2017. Garry was passionate about his support of organ donation and advocated that all should consider being donors. Garry loved to travel, and he and Aquina had traveled extensively in the States and out of country. They volunteered many summers in Medora with other Foundation volunteers. One of the most memorable trips he experienced was an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in May of 2018. Garry enjoyed watching the MN Twins and Vikings, but especially loved watching his grandchildren play sports! He was a proud member of Easton Yanish American Legion Post #10, Buffalo. They resided and farmed in the Thorp area for approximately four years, then move to the Town of Worden south of Stanley where they farmed for 32 years, retiring in 1979. Stephen enjoyed the outdoors, ice fishing, cutting wood, pan fishing, picking mushrooms, and still more fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing cards. (5 JUL 1947) A double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Pollock at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, July 5th, 1947, at ten o’clock at Stanley, when Miss Leona G. Langiewicz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Langiewicz, became the bride of Stephen Lato, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Lato of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.). The attendants were Miss Clarice Langiewicz, sister of the bride, maid of honor, and John Lato, brother of the groom, best man. The second couple were Miss Dolores Langiewicz, sister of the bride, and John Truba, both girls wore pink formals with pearls and earrings, which were a gift of the bride. Each carried bouquets of pink and white carnations. The bride wore a dress of white satin styled with a fitted bodice sweet heart neckline, long sleeves. The full skirt ended in a long train. She wore a fingertip veil with a coronet halo, trimmed with sprays of orange blossoms. She carried a bouquet of white lilies and carnations. Gift of the groom was a double stand of pearls with earrings to match. A reception following the ceremony was held at home of the bride, attended by relatives and close fiends. Over 200 families attended the evening dance and shower. The deceased was born Dec. 18, 1870 in the city of Wielepale Skrzynskie, Village of Nawsie in Poland. She was married there Oct. 26, 1887 to John Ciolkosz, who preceded her in death last March 30. She came to America in 1906 and has since resided in the Town of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.). She is survived by five sons, Joseph of Winsted, Conn.; Frank of Stanley; Lewis of Thorp; Walter of Boyd and William; and four daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Josephine) Staron of Thorp; Mrs. Ed (Mary) Smoczyk of Stanley; Mrs. Albert (Helen) Patchak of Cadott and Mrs. Harry (Stella) Patchak of Sheboygan. Two children died in infancy. She is also survived 59 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held November 8 at St. Mary Czestochowa Church of Stanley, with Rev. J. Kamla officiating and interment taking place in the parish cemetery. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers: Michael Patchak, Larry Staron, Erwin Ciolkosz, Henry and Jim Smoczyk and Rudolph Ciolkosz. Sunday, Feb. 7, 1960 of arterial sclerosis and cerebral embolism. She had been visiting near there the past year. Julia Szczepaniak was born in Krakow, Poland on March 11, 1882. She came to America in 1904 and was united in marriage to Joseph Szczech (now deceased) on Oct. 16, 1905 in Chicago, Ill. They came to Thorp in 1908 and settled on a farm in the town of Reseburg. Mr. Szczech passed away in 1931. Mrs. Szczech continued on the farm until 1958 when she went to stay with her daughters at Finley Park, Ill., and Berkeley, Ill., until death. She is survived by five sons, John and Louis of Thorp, Walter of Eau Claire, Frank of Norridge, Ill., and Joe of Oak Park, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Rogus of Finley Park, Ill, and Mrs. Olive Drake of Berkeley, Ill., one sister, Mrs. Louise Zydonis of Cleveland, Ohio, thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. The body was shipped to the Thorp Funeral Home here where it lay in state until the funeral. Funeral services were conducted by Father Connie Chilicki at St. Hedwig’s Chapel in the city at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, 1960, and interment took place in the parish cemetery. (28 JUL 1891 – 12 MAR 1966) Mrs. Frances Mary Slowiak, a resident of Route 3, Stanley, died suddenly Saturday at the home of her son Henry. Mrs. Slowiak was born Frances Ciolkosz July 28, 1891 in Poland. She came to the United States when 15 years old and settled in Chicago. Her marriage to Anton Slowiak took place in Stanley Oct. 26, 1909, and they farmed in that area. He died July 19, 1959, and since that time she had resided with her children. Surviving are six sons and seven daughters, Henry and Alex of Stanley; Walter, Vincent, Ted and John, all of Chicago; Mrs. John (Anna) Leja of Stanley; Mrs. Al (Mary) Dublicki, Mrs. Matt (Julia) Pober, Mrs. John (Louise) St. Lawrence, Therese and Victoria Slowiak, all of Chicago; and Mrs. Paul (Wanda) Chuey, Fox Lake, Ill; one sister in Poland, and great-grandchildren.
