Dearly beloved husband of 65 years to the late Josephine Szczech; Beloved father of Bernadette Kurzawski (Bill) of Rockford, IL, John Szczech III (Diane) of Denver, CO and Ed Szczech (Linda) of Santa Rosa, CA; Adored grandfather of Karyn Hagan (Greg) of Birmingham, AL, Kristyn King (Kevin) of Rockford, IL, Kathlyn Blassage (Peter) of Rockford, IL , Klarissa Pappas (Nicholas) of Menomonee Falls, WI, Kara, Christopher and Jenna Szczech all of Santa Rosa, CA, Brittany and Stephanie Szczech, both of Denver, CO, and J.W. John was born in Chicago, IL. John's parents came from Poland and he was proud of his ability to speak Polish and carry out some of the Polish traditions. As a young man, he dreamed of living in California and during WWII he received a job opportunity at Mare Island Shipyard and settled in Sonoma, living in one house for 50 years. John's professional career also took him into the Life Insurance industry for 30 years. He was a talented athlete and excelled in tennis, golf and bowling. John was an especially talented golfer. He received a Hole In One Award and was the Flamingo Club Champion in 1969 and 1970. Some other hobbies included bridge, fishing, walking and collecting. He collected and recycled many different items and metals and was quite conservation minded. John was a talented builder and made picture frames, furniture and major home additions. He loved to listen to music-Big Band, Polkas, Classics, and singers like Pavarotti. He loved to dance, especially the Polka and Waltzes. John was a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, The Young Men's Institute and the Knights of Columbus. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at 10:00AM at St. Rose Catholic Church, 398 Tenth St., Santa Rosa. Interment, St. Francis Solano Cemetery, Sonoma. Evening Vigil Rites will be celebrated on Monday, January 8, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the DANIELS CHAPEL OF THE ROSES, 1225 Sonoma Ave., Santa Rosa. Friends may attend a visitation beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
